The 16th Street Mall is a pedestrian and transit (bus) corridor extending from Union Station to the State Capital in Denver, Colorado. Since it opened in 1982, it has served as the backbone of Downtown Denver. Unfortunately, it has also experienced paver failures and high maintenance cost since its construction. A $149 million reconstruction project on the Mall started construction in 2022, including a redesign of the paver systems, including both sand set and mortar set systems. This presentation looks at innovations used in this important public space.
