The Hardscape North America Installer Championship is intended to test and recognize the skill, dedication and passion of hardscape contractors from Canada, the United States and Mexico. Each team that competes in the championship will have their understanding of industry best practices and guidelines (safety, quality and craftsmanship) tested in a race against the clock and other top installers in the industry. This championship will determine the best of the best in the hardscape industry!
Rules and Regulations
The championship is restricted to hardscape contractors. Each team member must be employed in the hardscape industry in North America as a professional installer of segmental retaining wall, clay and concrete pavers. This championship is not for amateurs or do-it-yourselfers! Each team member must sign, date and agree to the terms and conditions of the required HNA Installer Championship Team registration form.
Registration is not complete until 1) all team members are registered to attend HNA, 2) the Installer Competition fee is paid 3) proof of insurance is received by ICPI and 4) the completed and signed team registration form is received by ICPI.
All cancellations must be submitted to HNA in writing by Friday October 13, 2017. A refund less an administrative fee of $50 per team registration will be issued after the event. Substitutions will be permitted from the same company any time prior to Thursday October 19, 2017 without penalty. If the event is cancelled by HNA a refund of the full team championship registration fee will be issued after the event. HNA, ICPI, BIA and NCMA are not responsible for expenses incurred due to cancellation of the championship.
No Shows and Withdrawals
Teams must attend the pre-event meeting on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 at 6:00pm at the Hyatt Regency Hotel Louisville Downtown, 311 South 4th Street, Louisville, KY. At this meeting a random draw will be done to determine the preliminary round and construction area for each team. Teams are required to be at their designated construction area not less than 15 minutes prior to the start of the round they are competing in. Failure to report at these times or the pre-event meeting will constitute a withdrawal from the championship.
Materials and Tools
All materials to be used in the construction will be provided. Only materials provided by the event organizers and placed in the teams designated areas may be used in the construction. Materials discarded from previous rounds cannot be used in the construction. Teams cannot supply their own materials.
Each team will be provided with the basic hand tools and personal safety equipment. The following larger tools will be supplied for use during the Championship: Weber CF3 vibratory plate compactor, iQ360 14” masonry chop saw with integrated dust collection, screed rails, screed board, d-handled square shovel and wheelbarrow. Teams can bring and use their own small hand tools.
Format over Two Days
The preliminary rounds will have twenty-four (24) teams competing in six (6) rounds. During each preliminary round, all teams will construct an 8’x10’ patio area within 60 minutes as detailed in the supplied drawing which will require the installation of a seat wall, herringbone field, soldier course, bedding sand, edge restraint, and complete the initial paver compaction. Do not fill joints with sand or perform the final compaction. During the preliminary round(s) each team’s score will be calculated based on completeness, compliance to industry guidelines, safety, quality and craftsmanship as detailed in the Preliminary Round Judging Form by each judge. The team’s Preliminary Round Total Score will be the sum of their score from all judges during the preliminary round. At the end of the all preliminary round(s) each team will be ranked based on their Preliminary Round Total Score. The four teams with the highest Preliminary Round Total Scores out of all preliminary round(s) will advance to the Championship round.
During the final round, each team will be given ninety (90) minutes to complete their construction, according to their own creative design in the assigned construction area. The score during the final round will be calculated based on compliance to industry guidelines, safety, quality, craftsmanship and creativity. At the end of the final round, the scores from the final round will be used to rank the teams. In the case of a tie, the judges will determine the final ranking. The team ranked highest will be declared “Hardscape North America Installer Champion”.
A panel of judges will be selected by HNA and ICPI from experts in the industry to evaluate each team’s performance in relation to the judging criteria during the construction and inspection of the completed work. A panel of three experts will be selected to judge all preliminary rounds. A panel of three experts will judge the championship round. Judges cannot be related to, or employed in the same company as competitors.
Awards and Recognition
The award ceremony will take place immediately after judging for the final Championship round, beginning at approximately 3:45 p.m. Friday October 20th, in the HNA Installer Championship area.
The HNA 2017 Champions will receive a prize package valued at approximately $10,000. The package includes $1,000.00, an iQ360 14” masonry saw with fully-integrated dust collection plus accessories (valued at $5,348), a Weber MT CF3 Pro forward plate compactor (valued at $3,600), their name engraved on the HNA Installer Championship Cup, a plaque, recognition in various media including Interlock Design Magazine, Hardscape Magazine and HNA website.
The HNA 2017 Second Place team will receive $400.00, an iQ360 14” masonry saw with fully-integrated dust collection plus accessories (valued at $5,348), a plaque, recognition in various media including the Interlock Design Magazine and HNA website.
The HNA 2017 Third Place team will receive $100.00, a plaque and recognition in various media including the Interlock Design Magazine and HNA website.
The HNA 2017 Fourth Place team will receive a plaque and recognition in various media including the Interlock Design Magazine and HNA website.
Additional prizes may be added prior to the competition.
For each Regional Installer Championship winning team ICPI will provide a prize package valued at up to $4,000 for two team members and an alternate or coach.
- Round trip airfare to Louisville, KY (not to exceed $2,100 and arranged by ICPI)
- Individual accommodations at the Hyatt Regency Louisville, the HNA headquarters’ hotel, Wednesday October 18 through to Saturday October 21.

- Complimentary registration fee for HNA Installer Championship.
